  • Worst Mistake Ever - 1996 Pontiac Grand AM

I bought this car as I was graduating high school, and now I wish I never bought the car. I have had the EGR valve replace, Transmission clamp, fuel injectors, axle, and many other things at an inflated price. It has cost me more to keep it working then I wish I would of ever thaught. I will never buy a GM again.

Nice car to drive. Handles well. Comfortable. Nice features. Good engine and smooth transmission. Lots of untimely repairs. Two major and costly warranty repairs. 3 alternators, 2 window motors, 2 fuel filters, 2 O2 sensors, driver side control arm, fuel pressure regulator, starter motor, and the big bad water pump that costs about $550 to repair. Just hope the thermostat never goes out. Thats in the water pump.

I bought this car new and have had very good luck with it overall. Gas mileage averages 33 MPG. It always starts and runs very well.

  • Never again!! - 1996 Pontiac Grand AM

I started to have problems with this car from the very begining. We have replaced the altranator 3 times, water pump twice, had a new head gasket put in, and several other small items. Every year it is something else. They look great but they have many problems. (like coolant mysterously leaking) I will never buy a pontiac again.

  • Typical GM experience. - 1996 Pontiac Grand AM

While the interior stuff is nicely located, the seats arent good for entering and leaving the vehicle. Trunk space is cramped compared to others. Engine response is good when traction control is off. When turned on, there is a noticeable help with rain/ice slippage. Several components around the engine required awkward maintenance; Various sensors, valves, a lead pipe from the AC. . . but the engine itself, as well as transmission were strong. This Ive come to find typical in GM engines.

  • It sure has been built for keeps! - 1996 Pontiac Grand AM

I bought my 2.4L, 4 cyl Grand Am in 1997 used with 30,000 miles. Currently, its a shade under 170,000 and shes still going strong. I get ragged by many friends who say I have an old ugly car, but I cant disagree more. A few mechanical problems have occurred (2 alternators, 2 water pumps, window motors that STINK, and a vacuum tube that baffled every mechanic except a Pontiac dealership) have occurred in 9 years. Currently, itching at getting a G6 Convertible. Its hard not to keep this car until the wheels fall off, nice not having a car note! I have no regrets owning this car during my entire 20s. Installed alarm and CD disk changer, so its been functional and fun for me.

  • Go for the GA - 1996 Pontiac Grand AM

Ive had this car for just over 4 years now and have had only one thing go wrong other than routine things like brakes and such. The tumbler on my ignition went out but was covered under warranty. That was almost 3 years ago. Other than that this car has been nothing but reliable. I will certainly be buying another GA in the future.

  • After 8 years of ownership... - 1996 Pontiac Grand AM

The way I rated the car was based on where it stands now after 8 years. It was very reliable for me overall, but now the mechanical problems showing up are hard to diagnose and treat. Also, dash lights began burning out after about 5 years.
